East San Gabriel Valley Coalition for the Homeless (ESGVCH) Seeking Funds To Continue Efforts The East San Gabriel Valley Coalition for the Homeless (ESGVCH) is a non-profit 501C3 charitable organization, incorporated since 1994, and operates under a voluntary board of directors to directly aid people experiencing homelessness by: providing shelter, alleviating hunger, assisting with basic daily needs, helping to regain housing. Our resources come from local businesses, churches, service groups, government agencies, and private foundations. Homelessness in San Gabriel Valley: The Los Angeles Housing Services Authority (LAHSA) released its 2015 count showing that people living unsheltered 1,794 a 21% increase over the 2013 count of 1,427 unsheltered people. Most alarming is the increasing numbers of families without shelter. Unmet Need: ESGVCH provides what it can to assist the homeless, but resources are dwindling. Starting with the recession in 2008 formerly reliable funding sources for helping the homeless were cut. For example, at one time eight (8) local cities provided Community Development Block Grants funding to ESGVCH to assist the homeless from these communities. Due to cuts in CDBG funding, now only three cities have continued to provide grants and these grants are greatly reduced. Local foundation grant funding is also reduced, making it a challenge to continue to provide services for friends and neighbors who are without homes. Winter Shelter Services: Every winter since 1994, ESGVCH has provided night-time shelter for persons with nowhere to go. Up to 200 are admitted each night with 1400 unduplicated individuals and families sheltered during a winter season. The Winter Shelter opens on December 1st and operates nightly until March 1st. No one is turned away who comes for help, however, strict rules are enforced to prevent alcohol and drug abuse in the shelter. Six area churches open their facilities and provide volunteers to support ESGVCH’s Winter Shelter Program. The Coalition arranges for transportation of the clients to the church shelter sites. As many as 60 volunteers and 12 ESGVCH staff provide food, clothing, hygiene kits, soap, and towels for the showers and other supplies and the necessary security and supervision. The shelter also hosts weekly medical and dental clinics on site. The Emergency Assistance Center (EAC), open M-F year round, offers meals, showers, hygiene, products, transportation assistance, and referral services. A designated number of motel vouchers are available each month for families, elderly, and those who are ill or disabled. Transitional Housing: Two rental units where families can stay temporarily (2-24 months) enable them to conserve resources so they can transition back into permanent housing. Please consider a tax deductible contribution in assisting our brothers, sisters and families in the San Gabriel Valley. You can make a donation through our secure website: www.esgvch.org or send a check/money order to mailing address: ESGVCH, P.O. Box 93256, City of Industry, CA 91715. The ESGVCH office is located in the St. Martin de Porres Center of St. John Vianney Catholic Church at 1345 Turnbull Canyon Rd., Hacienda Heights, CA 91745. Phone: 626-333-7204. Hours 8:30-1:30pm, Monday through Friday. Email: esgvch@aol.com.
