PSA: Whopping cough, also known as pertussis, is a bacterial infection that causes severe coughing and that can be spread from person-to-person. The symptoms include severe cough sometimes followed by vomiting. Additionally, pertussis can cause complications such as infection in the lung and middle ear as well as bleeding in the eyes. Therefore, vaccination is vital for prevention. It is recommended to take the DTaP vaccine at the ages of 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 15-18 months, and 4-6 years. If you feel that you may have whooping cough, consult your doctor immediately in order to receive the proper tests and treatment. If your child has whooping cough and experiences a seizure or stops breathing, contact emergency services immediately. If your child has whooping cough and gets a high fever, vomits, or gets dehydrated, call your doctor immediately. To prevent spreading whooping cough, take precautions like wearing a mask, covering your mouth when you cough, washing your hands often, avoid being around babies and young children, make sure other people in your household get the pertussis vaccine, and do not let your child return to school unless permitted by doctor or nurse.
