THERE IS NO JOY IN MUDVILLE Yes, last night in “Mudville” a/k/a the Sports Media, there was no joy. For months the Mudville media had hyped their hero, he could not be beaten, he would produce an unbeaten season to upstage Don Shulas 1972 Dolphins 14 + 3 perfect season with 16 + 3 season for the record books. Yes, they were all true believers that this was the one they had waited for and then told their followers that Peyton Manning could not and would not be beaten. Certainly not by his old team led by an upstart who's dad was a back up to Peytons dad. The Denver Broncos were on their way to the Super Bowl and the stop in Indianapolis was just that, a stop to add another notch to Peytons belt. But as any football “Bookmaker” will attest, on “Any Given Sunday”, “Funny Things Can Happen on the Way to the Forum” Sunday night, “The Mighty Casey Struck Out The Mudville pundits were not fazed by the Colts scoring, nor the persistent pressure brought by the pass rushers. Not even when the mighty Peyton was sacked and the ball knocked from his sure hands. No, they still knew in their hearts that Peyton would pull it out, after all, that is the line they had preached since last year. The loss in the 2013 playoffs to the Ravens (38-35) in double overtime was pure luck, it would not happen this year. But then Luck ( Andrew) threw three touchdown passes, and the Colts were winning. There was still hope, Manning drove them downfield with less than 2 minutes, he had done it before, the faithful had no doubt, their hero was connecting with the receivers, he would pull it out. A field goal, and 15 seconds left on the clock, an onside kick, they held their breath, then the unspeakable was spoken, “The Mighty Casey had Struck out” The Broncos had lost their first game, the Broncos were no longer unbeaten, The Broncos would not have a perfect season. Peyton Manning had lost a game to his old team. The Mudville gang couldn't believe it, Head Mudder Bob Costas came close to tearbhgtvs@hotmail.coms trying to wrap it all up and make sense of the senseless. The field filled with joyous blue shirts, the hero wandered through them looking for a microphone, but Michelle Lafoya was not interested, she was interviewing the “David” who had just knocked out “Goliath” Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright; The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light, And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout; But there is no joy in Mudville — mighty Casey has struck out. * Byron Grimes Lake Ozark Mo 65049
