FOR WEED CA
In late spring of 2008 the Humboldt Fire rapidly spread towards Paradise. The career firefighter of the CalFire Siskiyou Unit accompanied by two Weed Volunteer Fire Department units. These Weed units were staffed by students of the College of the Siskiyous Fire Academy and volunteers leaving high paying jobs to make close to minimum wage protecting our town of Paradise.
Following the fire rehab crews were few and far between. Weed locals came to Paradise and paid their own room and board because they thought it was “the right thing to do”.
Last Monday Paradise Engine 81 had the opportunity to provide a partial payback responding to the Boles Fire in Weed.
After our 2008 fires the signs said THANKS FIREFIGHTERS.
Now it is truly time to thank WEED for helping us in the past.
Weed has lost 150 residential structures, some with more than one residence. Burned to the ground. Nothing left. In the area of town that burned many have no insurance. Others are renters with little if any coverage, college students, elderly and impaired. Even a few Weed firefighters lost their homes.
The world would be a better place if we all would help one another. This is one of MY PASSIONS. It is based upon the movie paying it forward. Weed helped us. So, we should help others more than we were helped. Soon the world will be a better place.
