Dana’s Formal Complaint About Methodist Hospital – Memphis, TN
My name is Dana Michelle Scruggs. On October 31st, 2000, I was admitted to The Methodist Hospital - Memphis/TN Psychiatric Unit on the Thomas Wing of the hospital. I was admitted for having suicidal ideations.
My therapist at the time was Julie Johnson LCSW. She was employed at The Christian Psychological Center on Central Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee.
Ms. Johnson was the therapist who had me admitted to Methodist Hospital. After a mandatory 72 hour hold (standard care for suicidal ideations) Ms. Johnson was going to place me in an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) (at The Christian Psychological Center) to help me cope with the issues that had made me suicidal in the first place. Randall Moskovitz MD refused to release me from the Methodist Hospital Psychiatric Unit.
Julie Johnson could find no reason to hold me against my will since I was no longer a threat to myself or others. She voiced her concerns to Randall Moskovitz MD, who ignored her request.
I was then held against my will for weeks. All of the staff psychologists, LCSW's, and counselors working on the psyche unit at that time (October 31st, 2000) agreed that I should not be held against my will! However, not one of them stepped forward to report Randall Moskovitz' illegal and unethical behavior.
Each time that I saw Dr. Moskovitz, he would tell me, "You are not going anywhere until you admit just what it was that you did that was wrong!"
Dr. Oakley Jordan (also a Methodist Hospital Employee) tried to talk Randall Moskovitz out of keeping me against me will . . . but Dr. Moskovitz
would not budge on the matter!
In October of 2000 I was employed at Methodist Extended Care Hospital (MECH). I was a Registered Dietitian named "David M. Scruggs" at the time. Dr. Moskovitz made his "bread and butter" ($$$$) at MECH. While being detained against my will, Dr. Moskovitz would say to me in private, "David, if you just confess and admit to your wrong doing . . . you can leave."
Margaret (Peggy) Strong MS, RN violated my patient privacy rights by discussing my psychiatric care with Dr. Moskovitz. You see, Peggy
Strong was the second in command of MECH at the time. Ms. Strong had great distain for me, and would have done anything to hurt me.
So, you may be asking yourself, "Why is Ms. Scruggs stepping forward now?" The answer . . . I am just about to complete my Master of Science Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT). I now have the psychological fortitude to fight back! Furthermore, I did not know that what Dr. Moskovitz and Margaret (Peggy) Strong - RN had broken the law, because no one at the hospital including the therapists (LCSW’s/MFT’s/Counselors) ever challenged or reported what Dr. Moskovitz was doing to me. I was held against my will for weeks! Yet, I was neither suicidal or homicidal at the time! Why didn't at least one psychiatric nurse, MFT, LCSW, Counselor, or Psyche Technician report Dr. Moskovitz' illegal actions? Was not each of these health care professionals knowledgeable regarding their own "Code of Ethics" related to criminal activity? patient rights?
At the time of the incident . . . after being locked up against my will for weeks . . . I suffered from Stockholm Syndrome.
This is a true Story! The very same thing that happened to me could happen to any American!
