In observation of National HIV testing Day, (Tuesday, June 27, 2017). Empower “U”, Inc., a Non-Profit 501 (c) (3) Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) and a State of Florida HIV Test site is collaborating with various community partners to host the SWAGG Health Exposition & Basketball Tournament, at Gibson Park (401 NW 12th Street, Miami Fl 33136), 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. The 2017 theme for National HIV Testing Day is:” Get Tested. Get Educated. Get Involved.”
There is a robust planning underway to ensure this event not only offers FREE HIV screening opportunities to a medically underserved area, but also provides a myriad of other complimentary medical screening and supportive services that are responsive to the needs of our community. These services include, but are not limited to: vital signs, blood/glucose and hemoglobin screenings; pediatric vaccinations and sports physicals: dental services; syringe exchange; homeless outreach; and identification acquisition services.
The festivities will conclude with a Basketball Tournament, featuring our young adults ages 14-17, from 5:00 p.m. -7:00 p.m. Coach Benjamin Hanks, Director of Gibson Park (in Overtown), has graciously committed to recruiting eight teams, of five young adults, for this competition. We are seeking to positively impact, increase access and cultivate new behavioral norms that address healthcare inequities in Miami- Dade County.
Our community will benefit greatly as a result of this unified and historic effort.
