This was once the sister AM to 103.5 WSHE and ran a rock format. The station was actually just as popular as WSHE 103.5 and showed in the ratings with shows such as "Herman and McBean" and "Jimmy and Steve in the Morning." Then, as AM began to die out, the station went through a period of being brokered religious and gospel, even sporting the new calls of WWIL. Under the ownership of Paxson Communications, who was then making an aggressive move from TV into radio, ran syndicated sports and political talk on the station. They got "stuck" 1580 as result of buying WSHE. For a while, a group of displaced DJ's from the school board's WKPX 88.5 FM bought blocks of airtime and ran alternative music for a couple of days a week in the evenings. Then the new owners who bought it from Paxson developed an "Entertainment Radio" format, which was just a brokered hodgepodge format, with a 50s to 70s oldies format filling out the unsold time. It sold again, to become Mystic 1580 a brokered talk and reggae format, eventually going with reggae music full-time. During some hard financial times and homelessness, Mystic still broadcast on 1580 but actually broadcast out of the old studios of WRBD 1470 AM--this was the result of the old 1580/103.5 studios and transmitter site and the surrounding trailer park (where the station was located) being developed into condos. Niche Radio owns the station today and broadcasts a full time Haitian format boosted by and FM translator at W258CZ 99.5FM.
